GIS Data

Environmental Health Section encompasses a large body of data which is not always easy to translate to communities, other city agencies and politicians who make vital decisions. The Program on Health, Equity and Sustainability is continually faced with new challenges in solving complex resource, environmental, and social problems to improve public health. GIS (Geographic Information Systems) has been an important technology used to link health information and factors that influence health in recognizable spatial patterns. GIS also has the capability to produce powerful maps which can be used as valuable pieces of information to communicate problems and results.

The Healthy Development Measurement Tool (HDMT) has been using GIS to offer a geographic depiction of the health status in San Francisco and quantify neighborhood baseline conditions. Our goal is has been to integrate this information with community planning as an approach for community leaders and other city agencies to identify the health, social, and economic challenges facing the neighborhood and provide collaborative solutions.

A portion of the HDMT GIS library data layers are available for download in ESRI Shapefile format. Each layer is the latest, most updated version of the data featured in the HDMT, but not necessarily the most current or up-to-date data existing. The data layer is periodically updated and will be uploaded to this web page when the data is updated on the indicator page.. See the complete list of available layers below and instructions to download.
